What is a brand?
Simply put, your brand is defined by a customer’s overall perception of your business. The founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, says it even better: “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.”
The basis for building a strong brand is being consistent in communication and experience across every platform. However, we’d argue it’s also critical to be unique and memorable. There are so many options for products and services in 2021, and with more and more businesses coming online it is critical that your first impression is your best!
Let’s look at the 3 phases of how to build your brand effectively.
Phase I: Brand Strategy
Brand Strategy is the foundation of your brand. This is the planning stage when we determine how your brand is different, memorable, and unique from your competitors. This phase can also influence your choices in future products and services you offer. If we were building a home, the brand strategy would be the blueprints, the blueprints of how your business is viewed by the rest of the world.
During Phase I, your most important puzzle piece will be identifying your target audience. To accomplish anything you must clearly know who you are trying to reach, and/or sell to. You will also need to know your competition, we can’t possibly hope to beat them if we do not know who they are, and how they are different from your brand. Brand Voice & Messaging is also important to establish during this phase, so you are set up for a consistent presentation both is visualization and text.
Phase II: Brand Identity
Brand Identity is the way that you convey this to the public with visuals, messaging, and experience. Your brand strategy will influence how you present your identity and align it with your purpose for the most impact. Keep in mind that to establish yourself as a brand you MUST be consistent, we can not stress this enough. If your brand logo uses text written in the font Lato, but your online ads have your brand name written in comic sans then your confusing your users (not to mention driving designers crazy with the use of comic sans!).
Your elements of brand identity should be applied across all channels consistently. It’s the way that your business becomes recognizable and helps us in the process to build your brand.
This includes your:
- logo,
- colors and fonts,
- website design,
- content,
- advertising,
- print or packaging,
- and more.
Phase III: Brand Marketing
Brand Marketing is the way that businesses or organizations highlight and bring awareness to products or services by connecting values and voice to the right audience through strategic communication. We have all seen advertisements that we realize are ads, such as billboards, and bus stop benches; however, there are many, many ways to market your brand effectively that do not even seem like advertising.
In 2020, the amplification of your brand image can be done effectively through various digital marketing activities:
- User Experience (i.e. your website)
- SEO & Content Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
- Email Marketing
- Paid Advertising (PPC)
Together, these channels are fundamental to gaining brand awareness and growth. Over time your brand will become more recognized by your potential clients, which helps build consumer trust, which ultimately leads to higher sales and repeat business.
